Myofiber: IL6 and atrophy

Pathway ID: SIGNOR-MyoIL6ATR

Description: During aging and disease states, chronic elevation of IL6 levels leads to muscle atrophy. Prolonged exposure of myofibers to IL6 results in increased expression of Atrogin-1, Caspase-3 and Myostatin via the JAK2/STAT3 pathway and the activation of AMPK. The subsequent dysregulation of the anabolic and catabolic processes regulating muscle protein turnover ultimately results in the loss of muscle mass (Zhou et al, Trends in Endocr. and Metab. 2016).
